SHAPING OF SOCIO-CULTURAL COMPETENCE OF STUDENTS BY MEANS OF ENGLISH ROVERBS

The paper deals with the questions of development of socio-cultural competence with the students, which in our opinion suggests not only the transference of knowledge to the students about the values and ideals of all-human and national culture but also: a) development of socially important features such as the sense of duty, tolerance, kind-heartedness, mercy, compassion, belief in good-naturedness of a person; b) development of the social position of the student, patriotism, sense of personal and collective responsibility; c) development of skills of inter-persona communication, of socially accepted and socially active behavour. Proverbial phraseology of the language under study may play an active and essential part in this respect. The reason for that is seen in the fact that proverbs, having accumulated people´s wisdom, present the treasure of moral and spiritual values, which have been tested by the social experience, i.e. by the lessons extracted from the lives of many generations through the empirical way. Having based on the activities-approach initiated by A. Leontyev, the step organization of work with proverbs from their mini-definitions to their paradigmatic grouping and thematic rubrication, contributes to the development of students´ socio-cultural competence.

1) формирование у студента социально значимых качеств, как то: чувство долга, толерантность, отзывчивость, милосердие, сострадание, вера в доброе начало человека;

2) формирование у студента его социальной позиции, воспитание патриотизма, гражданственности, ответственности;

A good life makes a good death; Goodness is better than beauty; He dies like a beast who has done no good while he lived; It is good to be good in your time, for you know not how long it will last; The good is the enemy of the best; Show a good man his error, and he turns it to a virtue; but an ill, it doubles his fault; It costs more to do ill than to do well, etc.

а) мироздание, природа, вечность: Nature does nothing in vain; He that follows Nature, is never out of his way; Nature, time and patience are the three great physicians; Nature is conquered by obeying her;

б) время, прошлое, настоящее, будущее: Time flees away without delay; Time and tide wait for no man; Things past cannot be recalled; Things present are judged by things past; The time to come is no more ours than the time past;

в) война, мир: In war all suffer defeat, even the victors; Who preachers war, is the devil's chaplain; In war it is not permitted twice to err; War is sweet to them that know it not; All the weapons of war will not arm fear; He that will not have peace, God gives him war; A just war is better than an unjust peace; Better an egg in peace than an ox in war; Better a lean peace than a fat victory; Weapons breeds peace; Of all wars peace is the end;

Life is but a span; Life is half spent before we know what it is; Life would be too smooth if it had no ribs in it; Life is not all beer and skittles; Our whole life is but a greater and longer childhood; Life is pilgrimage; Every day of life is a leaf of your history; Death surprises us in the midst of our hopes; Men know where they were born, not where they shall die; Praise a fair day at night и др.

(Honour is the reward of virtue; He that desires honour is not worthy of honour), долг, ответственность (Every man is the architect of his own fortune; As you sow, so shall you reap; Many commanders sink the ship), трудолюбие (Diligence makes an expert workman; Industry is fortune's right hand, and frugality her left; Genius is an infinite capacity for taking pains), (He gives twice who gives quickly; He is more noble that deserves, than he that confers benefits; Nothing costs so much as what is given us); добродетельность (Goodness is better than beauty; A handful of good life is better than a bushel of learning; A good man can no more harm than a sheep), (It is ill striving against a stream; When in Rome, do as the Romans do; Do as most men do, then most men will speak well of you) и др.

1a. The rotten apple injures its neighbours;

1b. One drop of poison infects the whole tun of wine;

1c. One scabbed sheep will mar a whole flock;

или

2a. An idle brain is the devil's workshop (bolster, cushion, couch);

2b. Satan finds some mischief still for idle hands to do;

2c. Idleness is the mother (root) of all evil (sin, vice);

или

3a. As a man sows, so shall he reap;

3b. You have made your bed, and you must lie on it;

3c. As a tree falls, so shall it lie.

1) для первого ряда синонимов: Evil communications corrupt good manners, etc.;

2) для второго ряда синонимов: By doing nothing we learn too do ill, etc.;

One must take responsibilities for his deeds.

1) подобрать антонимы к пословице: Clothes do not make a man (ожидаемый результат: Clothes make the man; Fine feathers make fine birds; Fair feathers make fair fowls; Good clothes open all doors; Manners make the man и др.);

2) подобрать синонимы к пословице: Too many cooks spoil the broth (ожидаемый результат: Many physicians have killed the king; Many commanders sink the ship; A public hall is never swept; Everybody's business is nobody's business и др.);

Courage and resolution are the spirit and soul of virtue (ожидаемый результат: Courage and perseverance conquer all before them; Fortune favours the bold; Valour is the nobleness of the mind; Fear can keep a man out of danger, but courage can support him in it; Great things are done more through courage than through wisdom; Valour is born with us, not acquired; Necessity and opportunity may make a coward valiant; Bold men have generous hearts; и др.).

(True friendship): A friend is another self; Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends; Perfect friendship cannot be without equality; A good friend never offends; A true friend is the best possession; They are rich who have true friends; No physician like a true friend; He is a good friend that speaks well of us behind our backs; Prosperity makes friends, adversity tries them; Friends are made in wine and proved in tears; At marriages and funerals, friends are discerned from kinsfolk; Real friendship does not freeze in winter; Among friends all things are common; A friend in need is a friend indeed; A good friend is my nearest relation.

(Value of friendship): It's merry when friends meet; One enemy is too many; and a hundred friends too few; One God, no more, but friends good store; Friends tie their purse with a cobweb thread; If friends have faith in each other, life and death are of no consequence; A friend in court is better than a penny in purse; Better lose a jest than a friend; A friend in the market is better than money in the chest; Life without a friend, is death without a witness; He quits his place well that leaves his friend there; It is good to have some friends both in heaven and hell.

(Choosing friends): Try your friend before you trust; Have but few friends, though many acquaintances; Before you make a friend eat a bushel of salt with him; Trust not a new friend nor an old enemy; Prove your friend ere you have need; Books and friends should be few but good; Go down the ladder when you marry a wife; go up when you choose a friend; Select your friend with a silk-gloved hand and hold him with an iron gauntlet; Sudden friendship, sure repentance.

(Maintaining friendship): Make not thy friend thy foe; When a friend asks, there is no tomorrow; Love your friend with his fault; Friendship cannot stand always on one side; A hedge between keeps friendship green; Have patience with a friend rather than lose him forever; Little intermeddling makes good friends; Treat a friend as if he might become a foe; Have patience with a friend rather than lose him forever; Speak well of your friend, of your enemy say nothing; Friendship increases in visiting friends, but in visiting them seldom; Friendship is a plant which must be often watered.

(Disloyalty of friends): Poverty parts fellowship; Poor folks' friends soon desert them; Fresh fish and poor friends become soon ill savoured; Dead men have no friends; When good cheer is lacking, our friends will be packing; Love your friend, but look to yourself; Misfortune makes foes of friends; Penny in purse will bid me drink, when all the friends I have will not; Tell nothing to thy friend that thine enemy may not know; Whensoever you see your friend, trust to yourself; Remember man and keep in mind, a faithful friend is hard to find; In time of prosperity, friends will be plenty; in time of adversity, not one amongst twenty; He that ceases to be a friend, never was a good one.

(Falseness of friends): There is falsehood in fellowship; Rich folk have many friends; The rich knows not who is his friend; He that has a full purse never wanted a friend; A false friend and a shadow attend only while the sun shines; All are not friends that speak us fair; When two friends have a common purse, one sings and the other weeps.

(Danger of friends): A reconciled friend is a double enemy; Better an open enemy than a false friend; Hatred with friends is succour to foes; It is better to be stung by a nettle than pricked by a rose; God defend me from my friends, from my enemies I can defend myself; Friends are thieves of time.

(Losing friends): A broken friendship may be soldered, but will never be sound; One may mend a torn friendship but it soon falls in tatters; Fall not out with a friend for a trifle; A friend is not so soon gotten as lost; When love puts in, friendship is gone; Lend your money and lose your friend.

1) к социальному положению: Poverty is the mother of all arts; The poor sit in the front benches in Paradise; Poor folk fare the best; The beggar may sing before the thief; He who is content in his poverty, is wonderfully rich;

2) к родственным связям: Blood is thicker than water; Charity begins at home; Near is my coat, but nearer is my shirt; Let them learn first to show piety at home; It is good to be near of kin to land; Kinsman helps kinsman, but woe to him that has nothing;

3) к житейской мудрости: Wisdom is better than strength; He is wise enough that can keep himself warm; Riches serve a wise man but command a fool; He is wise that is ware in time; He is wise that has wit enough for his own affairs;

The English are the swearing nation; Every English archer beareth under his girdle twenty-four Scots; One Englishmen can beat three Frenchmen; The English never know when they are beaten; It is an Englishman's privilege to grumble; An Englishman's Word is his bond и др.
