A prolonged postmortem interval complicates recovery of genetic material suitable for human identification, because cellular structures and nucleic acids gradually degrade. Research is especially difficult when remains are skeletonized, fragmented, exhumed, or altered by heat, since the choice of biological substrate depends on tissue preservation and environmental exposure. The purpose of the study is to conduct a comparative analysis of the preservation of deoxyribonucleic acid in the tooth pulp and bone marrow during a long postmortem interval, taking into account data on tooth cement, the petrous part of the temporal bone, compact and spongy bone, temperature, humidity, acid-base properties of the soil, and microbial communities. An analytical review of scientific publications issued from 2015 to 2026 was performed. The analysis included studies that reported tissue type, postmortem interval, burial or storage conditions, methods for extracting genetic material, and the effectiveness of molecular genetic examination. Dental pulp has high identification value because it is protected by enamel, dentin, and cementum, but this advantage depends on tooth condition. Bone marrow undergoes microbial and hydrolytic degradation more rapidly, whereas dense dental and skeletal structures may restrict external influence for a longer period. Dental pulp is a promising source of genetic material, but sample selection should consider the condition of remains, burial environment, and the availability of alternative skeletal structures.
