Почти во всех исследованиях, посвященных роману «Огненный ангел» В.Я. Брюсова, поднимается вопрос жанра этого произведения, потому что именно с вопросом жанра связана проблема интерпретации происходящего и построения сюжета. В статье рассматриваются основные традиции анализа романа в прижизненной критике, в советский период и в современном литературоведении. Основной проблемой трактовки романа является неопределенность категории сверхъестественного. Даже само наличие/отсутствие этой категории является дискуссионным. Целью исследования является анализ языкового уровня романа, а именно сравнений и метафор. Изучив этот уровень романа, часто используемый для характеристики переходных состояний сознаний и описания сверхъестественного, мы сможем сделать выводы о статусе потустороннего, а, следовательно, и уточнить линию сюжета и жанровую принадлежность текста. В ходе исследования были проанализированы сравнения и метафоры романа. Были выделены тематические группы «дезориентация» (подгруппы: «лабиринт», «опьянение», «безумие»), «стихия» (подгруппы «растения», «дети», блок «море, корабль, ветер, шторм») и «омертвение» (подгруппа «статуарность», «болезнь», «мертвенность», «тюрьма», «пытка», «казнь»). Описано их взаимодействие с друг другом. Сравнения и метафоры составляют в романе «Огненный ангел» единую систему. Эта система не оставляет сомнений в том, что присутствие сверхъестественных сил в «Огненном ангеле» является компонентом сюжета и объясняет, какого характеры эти силы.

In almost all studies on the novel The Fiery Angel by Valery Bryusov, the question of the genre of this work is brought up, because it is a genre that determines both the interpretation of what is happening and the structure of the plot. The article discusses main traditions of the analysis of the novel in literary criticism during Bryusov´s lifetime, in the Soviet period and in modern study of literature. The main problem in the interpretation of the novel is uncertainty of the category of the supernatural. Even the very presence/absence of this category is a debatable issue. The aim of this study is to analyze the linguistic level of the novel, namely its similes and metaphors. After examining this level of the novel, often used to characterize the transition states of consciousness and to describe the supernatural, we will be able to draw conclusions on the status of the beyond and, therefore, to clarify the line of the novel´s plot and the genre affiliation of its text. Similes and metaphors of the novel have been analysed in the study. The following thematic groups have been identified: «disorientation» (subgroups: «labyrinth», «intoxication» and «madness»), «the elements» (subgroups: «plants», «children» and the unit «sea, the ship, wind and the storm») and «mortification» (subgroups: «statuarity», «disease», «deadness», «prison», «torture» and «execution»). Their interaction with each other has been described. Similes and metaphors constitute a single system in the novel The Fiery Angel. This system leaves no doubt that the presence of supernatural forces in the novel is a component of its plot and explains the character of these forces.
